Senate talks OB-GYNs, commencement speeches and the Intercultural Diversity Center

For 15 minutes, the rigors and busy schedules of an SGA campaign came to a halt for some. Senate met Thursday night to discusses three resolutions, dealing with OB-GYNs, commencement speeches at graduation as well as the development of the Intercultural Diversity Center.

Resolution 40, encouraging the University to acquire more OB-GYNs. The resolution states, “only one OB/GYN is currently a member of the clinic staff at the Student Health Center,” and goes on to say this shortage has caused some students to be directed to non-OB-GYNs for checkups. 

The resolution was tabled by the Student Affairs Committee. Senator Ross D’Entremont, the chairman of the committee, said the committee has reached out to the author with questions and said the committee has yet to receive a response. D’Entremont said the committee will be happy to move forward with the legislation once the committee’s questions have been answered. 

Senate also discussed Resolution 41, which encourages the University to have commencement speeches during graduation ceremonies again. 

The resolution passed.

Additionally, Senate heard a resolution about further developing the Intercultural Diversity Center. 

The resolution vows the SGA’s support of the IDC and declares its resolve to help the Center by exploring the possibility of a new location, funding, hiring an official department head and other means of assistance. 

Ultimately, the resolution passed.

Order of Events:

1.) Resolution 40 encouraging the University to enlarge the number of OB-GYNs reintroduced, tabled by the Student Affairs Committee.

2.) Resolution 41 encouraging the University to once again have commencement speeches during graduation ceremonies reintroduced, passed.

3.) Resolution 44 to “further develop the Intercultural Diversity Center,” reintroduced, passed.
