Students overcome mental health stigmas: "Our diagnoses don't define us"

Henkin has lived with several mental health conditions because bipolar disorder often manifests depression anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). She has also been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and she said the difficulty that arises for her friends and her who live with it are the constant triggers and belittlement of their trauma that they face daily. 


Alabama gambling laws curbs revenue

States like Florida and Georgia have school programs and legislature where lotteries fund education. For instance, Georgia has the HOPE Scholarship Program which is applicable to universities and technical colleges. With the steady rise in tuition at the University of Alabama in recent years, the University may be in need of a new source of revenue. 


Few students save for retirement

According to an article published by Forbes magazine, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development conducted an international assessment to assess financial literacy of students. The study found about 18 percent of American students couldn’t perform basic financial literacy tasks, and the nation was below average in the percentage of students who met baseline literacy.


UPDATED: White nationalist speaker sparks controversy

Jared Taylor, a white nationalist,  was invited to speak at the University of Alabama on April 19 in the Russell Hall auditorium by the political group Students for America First. The title of his lecture is “Diversity: Is it Good For America?” Taylor said he plans to answer that question with a resounding “no.” UPDATE (10:22 a.m. 4/16/2018): The New Century Foundation, the organization that publishes American Renaissance, said Jared Taylor's event has been postponed indefinitely. Members of SFAF couldn't be reached for comment. 


Students stave off sleep for grades

Bob McKinney, an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at the College of Community Health Sciences, said not having enough sleep has negative effects on a person’s memory, ability to think and concentration.
