The University’s 15th annual Graduate School Preview Day was held Thursday afternoon at the Ferguson Theater. About 500 students participated in the event, which included an informational seminar familiarizing students with the benefits of graduate education, small group information sessions with different graduate programs on campus and free Kaplan practice tests for the GRE, GMAT and LSAT.
Graduate enrollment at the University is growing, with a record 4,050 students enrolled this year. Graduate School Dean David Franco said the school is growing in depth as well as quality, and he stressed the school's commitment to student involvement in research and publications.
Natalie Adams, assistant dean of the graduate school, said there are many opportunities for graduate students at the University.
"This program gives us an opportunity to showcase them," Adams said.
Ron Dulek, keynote speaker and management professor, challenged students to think about their passions when planning their futures.
"Consider yourself an investment," Dulek said, citing the U.S. Census Bureau statistic that estimated Americans with graduate degrees earn an average of $12,000 more per year than those with bachelor's degrees. Graduate students also face significantly less unemployment compared to the national average and are more competitive for top positions in all fields.
After the lecture, students broke into 12 small groups to have discussions with faculty members from their field of interest.
"It's meant to be information sharing and for the students to be able to ask questions," Adams said.
Free Kaplan practice tests were administered in the Ferguson Ballroom. Approximately 550 students pre-registered to take practice GRE, GMAT and LSAT exams. Adams said for many students, taking the entrance exams can be an intimidating process, but the practice exams help give the student a general idea of what areas they need the most improvement.
Kaplan representatives will also be present on campus to offer a make-up session on Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. They will offer the PCAT, DAT, OAT, MCAT, GRE, GMAT and LSAT practice exams in Bidgood Hall. Registration is available at www.kaptest.com/practice.
