A look at gymnastics' perfectionBy Terrin Waack | 03/08/2016 9:55pm
After Friday’s loss to LSU, the Alabama gymnastics team dropped one spot in the national rankings. It now stands at No. 4 and the Tigers took over Alabama's former No. 3 spot.
While in Baton Rouge, Alabama scored a season-low 196.225 while the Tigers scored a 197.925. The Crimson Tide holds an average of 196.977 and a high of 197.550, which was posted against Georgia.
Oklahoma is still on top with a season average of 197.514 and a high of 198.075, followed by Florida with an average of 197.411 and a high of 198.175.
Along with finishing the meet against Georgia with a season-high score, the Crimson Tide had its one and only gymnast this season to post a perfect 10. Senior Lauren Beers’ routine on the vault was perfect and earned her a 10 from both judges.
The Sooners’ Chayse Capps scored a perfect 10 on the balance beam.
The Gators have claimed a perfect 10 score on every event except for on the vault. Alex Murtry had one on the uneven bars, Bridget Sloan posted two on the balance beam, and Kennedy Baker earned another one for Florida on the floor exercise. Even with its season-high score, Alabama lost to the Gators on Jan. 29, 198.175 to 197.525.
The Tigers have Ashleigh Gnat leading the way with four perfect 10s - a pair on the vault and a pair on the floor exercise.
Last season, Alabama did not post a single perfect 10. Beers’ this season also marked the first perfect 10 under Alabama coach Dana Duckworth.
In 2014, under former coach Sarah Patterson, Alabama’s Diandra Milliner scored one on the vault and Kaitlyn Clark scored one on the balance beam. Milliner had previously scored a perfect 10 on the vault in 2012, along with Geralen Stack-Eaton. Before that, the Crimson Tide hadn’t scored one since 2005.
There has only ever been one gymnast in NCAA history to get a perfect 10 on every event competing all around and that was Georgia’s Karin Lichey in 1996.
In 2005, Alabama gymnast Ashley Miles set a perfect 10 milestone, scoring two – vault and floor exercise – during the NCAA Super Six Team Finals. She is only the second gymnast to do so. She scored 11 total during her time at Alabama.
Beers is nearing the end of her Alabama career and her perfect 10 this season was her first. She is the only current Alabama gymnast with one tied to her name.
