Walmart salads recalled in southern states

A Fresh Express Walmart salad has been recalled after two people in Florida found a dead bat in their package.

The affected products are five-ounce containers of Organic Marketside Spring Mix with a best-if-used-by date of APR 14, 2017 on the front label.

The Food and Drug Administration said the salad was distributed to stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Walmart has since removed the product from their shelves and started working with authorities to investigate.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been investigating the situation to see whether the bat was infected with rabies. They have been unable to definitively rule the possibility out due to the deteriorated condition of the bat.

According to the CDC, consumers who ate the recalled salad product and did not find animal material are not at risk of rabies. If anyone did eat the salad and found animal material, the Center recommends they contact their health department for evaluation.
