Nine years ago, superhero movies were not the hot button commodity they are today However, they still had success at the box office, from Sam Raimi’s original “SpiderMan” “Trilogy” (Let's just call it 2 ½ movies) or the original set of X Men movies. This all changed of course when Marvel released “Iron Man” to the world in 2008, and since the initial ground work of the universe was built, Marvel began to tackle their largest feat ever: a cinematic Universe. Now, nine years later and it seems like once every other month we have a superhero movie coming out. I plan to prove to you that the last movie Marvel plans of releasing this year, “Thor: Ragnarok” will be the best of the three.
When it comes to the Thor movies, I’ll be the first to admit that I really didn’t love them the way others did. I always thought they were slightly boring, and I was never really the biggest fan of Thor himself, which adds an element of difficulty when it comes to watching these movies. However, after seeing the first teaser, released on Monday, it immediately blew me away. This "Thor" movie, unlike the other two, has finally decided to embrace color, and it looks gorgeous because of it! They have finally nailed the vibrant and colorful space that I remember from the comics growing up. The world they visit finally looks fun, and not dark, grey and brooding like the last two films. Personally, I think this change happened when director Taika Waititi was brought on board. Most people might not know Waititi, but his last film “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” was lighthearted, funny and excellently shot, capturing New Zealand’s Bush beautifully. Waititi also has incredible comedic chops, as evident by his 2015 movie, “What we do in the Shadows,” a mockumentary about Vampires in New Zealand that is chock full of dry humor and gags, something I really hope he brings with him to Thor.
Lastly, I want to talk about the cast of this movie. Now that the Infinity War is approaching quickly, the solo movies have slowly begun to become mini ensemble movies, with around five or six characters from previous films returning. Along with a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba and Anthony Hopkins, they’ve also decided to bring in new characters to the Thor Movies, including Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange, and Jeff Goldblum. That’s got to be one of the most stacked casts for a marvel movie since Civil War.
This movie has all the promise to be amazing. With a very capable and funny director at the helm and a great cast, nothing should go wrong. “Thor: Ragnarok” comes to Theaters on Nov. 3.
