At this point in the semester, many of us just want to get off campus and get out Tuscaloosa.  Luckily, Birmingham is only a 45 minute drive and offers many unique options every weekend. This weekend, the city does not disappoint. Here’s a list of hot spots to check out in the ‘Ham this weekend. 

Rumba Latina Birmingham: Masquerade Ball

The annual Rumba Latina Birmingham Masquerade Ball will take place Saturday night at The Saturn from 9 p.m. – 2 a.m. Attendants are encouraged to dress up and wear their mask to the ball. A DJ will be there playing salsa music, said John Ocampo, coordinator of the event. The event is for 18 and up and tickets can be purchased on site for $10. The Saturn is located at 200 41st St. S.

Twenty One Pilots and Judah and the Lion

While tickets are a little pricey (over $100) they are still available for die-hard fans hankering to see Twenty One Pilots live. They will be at the BJCC in the Legacy Arena tonight at 7 p.m.

The Market at Pepper Place

“The best Alabama growers, food producers, and makers in Birmingham,” according to pepperplacemarket.com, is open for their winter’s farmer’s market every Saturday from 8 a.m – noon.The streets will be lined with vendors selling fresh produce and handmade goods. Be sure to take the short stroll over to The Red Cat coffee shop while you’re there and enjoy some coffee.

Epic Read-A-Thon

The Desert Island Supply Co. is hosting “a 24 hour, non-stop out-loud reading of classic tales about daring voyages and great adventures,” according to birmingham365.org. The event free to participate but does work as a fundraiser benefiting the Woodlawn Writers Corps to deliver poetry workshops to more than 500 students in local elementary and middle schools. Those who wish to join in can sign up at discobham.com/epic for a 10 minute reading slot. The event will take place at 550 First Ave N and will run from 10 a.m on Saturday until 11:55 p.m on Sunday.

Kaleb Hensley live at The Tin Roof

Nashville-born musician Kaleb Hensley will be performing live Saturday night at The Tin Roof located at 2709 7th Ave S. This event is 21 and up and the cover charge is $5. The show starts at 10 p.m. Hensley writes his own music as well as plays covers of country songs

All You Can Eat Cereal Breakfast

Every Sunday morning from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The Saturn Coffee Shop and Bar hosts an All You Can Eat Cereal Breakfast. Around 30 different types of cereal, milk, pop tarts and other breakfast goods are provided. The coffee bar is also open. The event is free but a $2 donation is requested. All money donated benefits a different organization each week. The Saturn, located at 200 41st St. S., plays old cartoons on the big screen and over 100 board and card games are available for play as well.
