Northport mayoral election to have runoff

A runoff election will be held to determine the new mayor of Northport. Incumbent Mayor Bobby Herndon received the most votes in the municipal election on Tuesday, but failed to earn a clear majority . Herndon will run against Northport’s former Council President Donna Aaron.

Herndon and Aaron received 45 percent and 28 percent of the 3,424 votes respectively, according to Tuesday night’s unofficial totals. Four of the six candidates received more than 10 percent of the votes, while the other two received 1 percent each.

This will not be Herndon’s first runoff election. In 2008 he earned 46 percent of the vote and then won in the runoff against incumbent mayor Harvey Fretwell.

“I hate to get this close and not win it outright, but I respect Donna and consider her a friend,” Herndon said in an interview with The Tuscaloosa News. “If we have a runoff I hope all our supporters keep their heads and have a good clean race.”

The runoff election will take place on Oct. 4
