Women's golf comes in second at Northrop-Grumman Regional Challenge

The No. 11 Alabama women’s golf team went into the final round at the Northrop-Grumman Regional Challenge with a tied lead of 5-over par with No. 14 Washington. The Huskies shot six less times than the Crimson Tide on Tuesday, allowing them to take the title at 6-over par and leave Alabama in second.

Alabama came out the first round on fire. The Crimson Tide shot a tournament-best round of 278. With the 6-under par score, Alabama led by seven shots after the round. The Crimson Tide lost its momentum on Monday, shooting 11-over par, which left it tied with Washington at the end of the day.

“In one sense, this was a very successful event in that we beat some of the best teams in the country,” coach Mic Potter said. “We were beaten by a very solid Washington team today, and they hit the shots they had to at critical times during today’s round. On the other hand, we had a number of errors over the past two days that cost us keeping it close at the end. We must go home and clean those things up if we are going to continue to compete for championships this spring.”

Even though the Crimson Tide did not finished the way it wanted to, the team finished above nine other ranked teams, including No. 1 Southern California, No. 2 Duke and No. 3 UCLA.

Individually, three Alabama players finished in the top ten as well. Janie Jackson at 1-under par came in second, Lakareber Abe finished tied for fourth with a score of 1-over par and Cheyenne Knight scored 2-over par to tie for eighth place.

“I am very proud of Janie, Lakareber and Cheyenne for their top-10 finishes,” Potter said. “This gives all three girls something to build on this spring.”
