Men secure top four finish as SEC Swimming and Diving Championships conclude

The conclusion of the 2016 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships in Columbia, Mo., brought forth a fitting end to a successful weekend that saw the men’s team grab fourth place after finishing fifth last year while the women’s team finished 10th.

Junior Connor Oslin continued to lead by example with another podium finish Saturday. After winning Fridays SEC 100 backstroke title, Oslin reached the podium again taking second in the 200 backstroke as he improved his school record time to 1:40:42. Teammate Christopher Reid placed third.

The 100 Freestyle saw a host of Crimson Tide swimmers finish strong. Kristian Gkolomeev took fourth with a time of 42.67, Lurent Bams finished in 42.91 taking sixth, Robert Howard finished 12th with a time of 43.78 and Brett Walsh rounded out the competitors with a time of 44.39 to place16th.

In the 200 backstroke Crew Wellford of Memphis, Tennesse, took 16th in a time of 1:44.75.

Juniors Anton McKee and Pavel Romanov competed in the 200 breaststroke placing fifth and 14th, posting times of 1:54.30 and 1:57.57 respectively.

The team composed of Bams, Reid, Howard, and Gkolomeev concluded the men’s events taking the bronze medal in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 2:51.31.

The Crimson Tide women were well represented in the 200 breaststroke. Bridget Blood finished eighth with a time of 2:10.05 and Marian Yurchishin in a career-best time of 2:10.48 took 17th. 

Freshman Katie Coughlin had her career best time of 1:56.63 for 19th and senior Emma Saunders finished 21st with a time of 1:57.18 in the 200 backstroke with Coughlin
