Suspended running back Tyren Jones arrested, dismissed from team

Late Tuesday morning, Alabama running back Tyren Jones was arrested on one charge of second-degree possession of marijuana.

Tuesday afternoon, Alabama coach Nick Saban dismissed him from the team.

“Tyren Jones was indefinitely suspended from the football program early in the semester,” Saban’s statement read. “He was given an opportunity academically and from a team rules standpoint, but he failed to do any of the things necessary to comply with the rules of the Alabama football program. He was dismissed from the team when he refused to follow the parameters given to him for reinstatement.”

It is the third arrest of an Alabama football player in four days and second dismissal of a player in the same time period.

The car Jones was in was pulled over for speeding in the 1300 Block of East 10th Avenue. According to the Tuscaloosa Police report, the officer could smell “a very strong odor of marijuana” when he approached the car.

Officers found “marijuana and digital scales inside the vehicle,” which belonged to Brandon Hansberry. An officer found a small amount of marijuana in Jones’s pant pocket, giving the officers probable cause to arrest both, according to the police report.

The other two passengers were not named and were released without being charged.

Hansberry is being held on $20,000 bond in the Tuscaloosa County Jail. Jones was released on a $1,000 bond.
